Joby partners with CAE for eVTOL aircraft pilot training
CAE (NYSE: CAE) (TSX: CAE) today announced a collaboration with Joby Aviation Inc. (NYSE:JOBY), a California-based company developing all-electric aircraft for commercial passenger service, to develop and qualify flight simulation training devices that will be used to train future pilots of Joby's revolutionary all-electric aircraft.
CAE will collaborate with Joby to build pilot training devices for the company's electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, leveraging the core simulation technology Joby has been developing for the past five years.
Joby plans to produce and operate its aircraft, which will necessitate the training of a new generation of pilots. Flight simulators, which are used to model aircraft flight in a variety of situations and conditions, are an important component of preparing pilots to fly a new type of aircraft.
Bonny Simi, Joby's Head of Air Operations and People, said, "CAE has a great reputation for delivering excellent simulation and training solutions." "We see a world in which thousands of Joby pilots fly our planes every day, and we couldn't ask for a finer partner to help us get there."
Joby is now working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to obtain its Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate, which would create the processes and regulatory clearances required for the company to begin commercial operations in 2024.
CAE's Group President, Civil Aviation Training Solutions, Nick Leontidis, said, "We are happy to join with Joby to assist bring their pioneering vision to life." "With over 75 years of experience in the design, development, and manufacture of flight simulators, CAE brings substantial expertise with new aircraft types to support Joby's eVTOL fixed base flight training device and full-flight simulator's FAA qualification."
Project Resilience, a CAD$1 billion investment in future aviation technologies, was recently revealed by CAE. CAE's position as a leader in end-to-end technology development, operational support, and training solutions for eVTOL pilots and Advanced Air Mobility is strengthened by this investment.
Joby's eVTOL aircraft is meant to make rapid, emissions-free, and convenient air travel a daily reality in cities and towns around the world, thanks to its low noise profile. Joby's fly-by-wire aircraft feature a unified flight control system and controls that are identical to those found in fixed-wing aircraft, allowing pilots to make a seamless transition.
"We feel that flying for Joby will be a terrific career option for many pilots," Simi stated. "We'll provide pilots with a predictable schedule that permits them to be home every evening, a luxury not afforded to most professional pilots."
