Maserati Boomerang turns 50
A dream automobile, an extreme, futuristic, almost illogical, undeniably gorgeous model capable of imprinting itself on the mind of every single fan: it's been half a century since the Maserati Boomerang debuted at the Geneva Motor Show on March 9, 1972. It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's legendary hand and made by Italdesign.
Maserati Boomerang - a mockup of which made a brief debut at the 1971 Turin Motor Show: just one model was ever produced, and it was displayed at the Swiss show in 1972 as a fully functional registered vehicle. Italdesign's starting point (chassis and complete mechanical) was a Maserati Bora, which featured a central eight-cylinder rear engine with a 90° layout that produced 4,719 cc. It could produce 310 horsepower, allowing it to reach speeds of about 300 kilometres per hour. The rear-wheel-drive vehicle had a five-speed transmission.
The two-seater sports coupé was never produced. Instead, it created a stylistic legacy that was carried on not just in Giugiaro's later works, but also in other projects, acting as inspiration for a variety of European and American manufacturers.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the Boomerang's distinctiveness was exhibited by its wedge shape and bold, crisp lines, which projected an image of penetration, force, and speed.
With a sloping windscreen and a panoramic sunroof, the vehicle was developed along a horizontal line that divided the automobile in half. A strip of metal was inserted between the original windows, especially on the two doorways. In the front, the retractable square headlamps stood out, as did the horizontal lights in the back.
The dashboard gauges were incorporated into the spokeless steering wheel, and the seats were positioned quite low, making the interior exceedingly modern.
The Boomerang, which was the only one ever manufactured, also made appearances in international contests. It passed through several owners, appeared in a number of auctions, and was even featured in commercials.
The Maserati Boomerang, regarded by many as a true work of art, was groundbreaking and influenced the design of subsequent automobiles. It carried on Maserati's legacy of generating distinctive automotive concepts, iconic and avant-garde cars that were technological and stylistic trailblazers.
With the MC20 super sports car, the new Grecale SUV, and the Nettuno engine, a patented synonym for technical revolution, Maserati is more unique than ever for its design and revolutionary by nature.
